VIII Ccongress of the EAJS took place in Moscow on July, 23-27, 2006.

The VIIIth Congress of the European Association for Jewish Studies appeared to be the first Congress in East Europe. The Congress showed that it became an event not only for Europe and CIS but for the whole World. Such countries as United Kingdom, USA, France, Germany, Netherlands, Austria, Israel, Russia, Belarus, Ukraine, Japan and other were being represented. This shows that the Jewish Studies in Russia was considered on a worldwide level.

The Organizing Committee has received 487 applications for a participation in the Congress. 480 applications were chosen. 280 scientists and young scholars have attended the Congress to present their researches on Jewish history and culture from Bible to modern ages as well as linguistics, sociology, Israeli studies.

The theme of the Congress was "Past and present perspectives in Jewish Studies".
This theme focusesd on the philosophy and the prospects of Jewish Studies. There has been no lack of ideas and research during last decades, yet there is a feeling that a lot can be changed and renewed now.

One of the Congress’ aims was to answer to the questions:

  • Are we moving into the age of Post-Postmodernism?
  • Are we returning to old patterns?
  • Do we need meta-history once again?

The Congress’ of the European Association for Jewish Studies

Once in four years the European Association for Jewish Studies holds the Congresses which join both famous specialists and young researches from all over the World. Every four years a new President of the European Association for Jewish Studies is elected. The President represents the new European Country where the next Congress is going to be held.
